I recently enjoyed <a href="http://www.amawaterways.com/" style="color: #336699; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">AmaWaterways</a>‘ Black Sea Voyage that stayed on the Danube River. “Black Sea” indicates a region of Europe also known as Eastern Europe or the Balkans. This voyage is ahead of the industry curve in a region that was devastated by war and communism twenty years ago and, although lightly traveled, has an emerging tourist industry.</div>

Aboard the AmaPrima, we called our stateroom a stately room with a French balcony as well as an outside balcony. Waking up to a sunny view of the river and enjoying a star-studded drink on our private balcony were enchanting ways to begin and end our days. The stateroom was compact but comfortable and furnished with a desk, two chairs and a coffee table. Wifi is free throughout the boat, but reception varies depending on geographic location. This region is less developed than Western Europe.</div>

With flutes of champagne we toasted casting off and were stunned by Budapest ignited in shades of white and gold. We sailed under illuminated bridges and by gloriously lit historical buildings. We could hear the program director’s narration on the deck where most passengers were seated in lounge chairs and covered with shawls. His narration was broadcasted in the lounge for passengers who wanted a cozier view.</div>

Dining is especially pleasant with open seating and buffet options for breakfast and for lunch salads and desserts. On two evenings, dinner began with an amuse bouche. In addition, a small sorbet was served before the main course. Menu choices included regional cuisine such as Hungarian goulash, lentil soup with sausage, sauerkraut soup, chilled yogurt blueberry soup, and langos – fried bread. This Hungarian street food topped with sour cream and cheese paired well with an elegant dinner.</div>

Although the dining room is walled with windows on both sides, the best dinner-time vistas are at the Chef’s Table restaurant at the front of the ship: here, three sides are all glass. Seating only 24 and with an open kitchen where the chef prepares your meal and explains what he is doing, it is an unusual and enjoyable experience. The four-course set menu gives two choices for an entrée. Guests are encouraged to dine there once and are not charged. The menu is repeated most nights.</div>

A selection of excursions was offered on most days. The first morning we visited Pecs, which is the former European capital of culture with a spacious, flower-filled town square and a church with Roman foundations. After lunch on board, we enjoyed wine tasting in Villany, one of Hungary’s most prestigious wine regions. Some passengers used the ship’s bikes or walked to explore Mohacs, the town where we docked. A Turkish victory 500 years ago still shapes the culture. Symbols and statues of men wearing alarming Buso (masks) represent the villagers’ attempts to scare off the Turkish invaders.</div>

Other stops along the Danube included Vukovar, Croatia; Novi Sad and Belgrade, Serbia; Vidin and Rousse, Bulgaria; and Giurgiu, Romania. From Giurgiu, it was an hour and a half bus ride to Bucharest, but worth the time on the bus to see a city recovering from Ceausescu who was execukted in 1989 after a brutal totalitarian rule. I saw many travel agency signs in a country whose citizens were not allowed to cross the borders a generation ago. The Village Museum, open since 1936, has more than 60 original houses, farmsteads, and churches dating back to the 1700s from historic regions of Romania.</div>

Our excursion to Vukovar, Croatia, was especially meaningful to me. I was there in 1997 as a journalist covering the aftermath of war with Serbia. Even after a few years of an uneasy peace, hidden shells were still exploding; ruined homes were mined. A one-legged man with hand-hewn crutches made awkward detours around holes from ordinance that beat his once graceful town to rubble. Survivors bought food and clothing at wooden stalls or begged with trembling hands and need mapped on their faces. No church bells tolled. Steeples had fallen along with homes and hospitals, along with soldiers and innocents, along with trade and tradition.</div>

Now, the town that had been 95 percent demolished has been 75 percent rebuilt. Refugees have returned, commerce has taken root. Recreational boats are in the harbor. Sidewalk cafes are lively, and an outdoor market has an abundance of produce and customers. Bodies have been reclaimed from mass graves and reburied in a hauntingly beautiful cemetery. The water tower that withstood 1600 bombs and grenades stands as a testament to a spirit that Serbia could not break.</div>

Croatia, one of my top summer destinations for 2015! I love the cobbled side streets, people watching on a sunny afternoon, the coffee culture. The wine. Cocktails. Sun. Architecture. The old churches and cathedrals, and counting the sailing boats bob up and down in the distance. But what is new to me are the highly regarded music festivals in Croatia. For me it is not something I base my holiday destination around, however after my recent post on Ibiza and its new direction (forgetting the super clubs and welcoming the super yachts, being health conscious and the famous foodies!), I thought it may be time for a new party place to emerge. <strong>Croatia Rocks</strong></div>

Last year we saw the first ‘Meribel Rocks’ in the French Alps, but this summer sees Ibiza Rocks’ top destination takeover come to Croatia with ‘Croatia Rocks’. Running from the 19th – 23rd July, the festival will be held on Zrce Beach, on the Island of Pag. With over 100 hours of live music, DJ’s and dancing, this one is not to be missed! Being host to Ibiza Rocks world domination, Croatia has suddenly upped a notch on the A-Listers destination guide for 2015.</div>

Established in 2010, this year will be the festivals 5th year of 5 full days of hedonism!  Running from the 28th June – 2nd July, Hideout is one of the leading electronic music festivals in a festival goer’s calendar. Located on Zrce beach also, expect to be dancing poolside or out at sea on a boat party. When the sun sets, dance under the stars and get lost in your own music.</div>

The Garden Festival on the 1st-8th July is in Tisno. If you haven’t got tickets for this one already, you may have to watch from a far, or follow the antics on Facebook and Instagram. The Garden Festival is, as Ibiza Rocks is, celebrating its 10th birthday AND ending it with a bang. Yes, 2015 will be the last Garden Festival. Party on land, on the sea, wherever you wish with a line up to rival a short novel, this is going to be one big party.</div>

Electric Elephant is a beachside carnival for clubbers. Expect a huge mix of electric, reggae, soul, techno and house. Barbarellas, an open air club in Tisno, is a major location for this festival, along with daytime boat parties & beach parties. Here’s a top tip – choose a higher room away from the pool noise to make the most of your excellent seascape balcony. If you’d like to leave the hotel to explore, taxi rides to local villages are quick and cheap, but it’s very easy to stay at the hotel; for the length of your stay.</div>

If you didn’t know already, Brazil is a nature lover’s paradise with a huge diversity of wildlife and birdlife to excite even the most experienced of enthusiasts. Most of Brazil’s best known areas for wildlife and nature are The Pantanal, the Amazon and Iguassu Falls but with such as huge country there’s no surprise that there are many other spectacular areas too. Fabulous national parks such as the Chapada Diamantina National Park, the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, the Aparados da Serra and the Lencois Maranheneses National Park to name but a few.</div>

Outside of Rio de Janeiro one of Brazil’s most visited destinations is the spectacular Iguassu Falls. The falls span Argentina and Brazil with close up views on the Argentine side and panoramic views on the Brazilian side. Wildlife abounds in the park with lots of birdlife, coatis, monkeys and occasionally jaguars being sighted too.</div>

The Pantanal is a vast expanse of wetlands which straddles the borders of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia and is without question the best place to spot wild animals in the whole of South America and therefore the best place to spot wildlife and animals on a Brazil holiday. It is the world’s largest freshwater wetland and one of the best places in the world for birdspotting. The Pantanal in Brazil is split across two states, Mato Grosso (the northern Pantanal) and Mato Grosso do Sul (the southern Pantanal). Both areas offer the visitor a fabulous opportunity to see Caiman, Anaconda, Capybara, Ocelot, Marmoset, Howler Monkey, Giant Otter, Tapir, Peccary and for the lucky few, the Jaguar. In fact, it’s the best place to see wild mammals outside of Africa and is home to eight of South America’s ten types of wild cat. The Pantanal floods seasonally which gives it very distinct times of the year in which to visit. The incredible array of birdlife on offer between June and August is amazing. Parrots, Toucans, Macaws and a variety of other birds cover the sky and the trees and even lazing in a hammock can offer a fabulous platform for seeing birdlife in Brazil.</div>

Think of Brazil and you think of the Amazon, the vast river which dissects the north of the country. The Amazon though is far more than just a river. It is a huge area of rainforest and waterways covering six of Brazil’s states stretching from its mouth at the Atlantic at Belem all the way to the Peruvian, Colombian and Bolivian borders. A journey along the length of the Amazon is the stuff of adventurers, boat-hopping and spending a couple of weeks in a hammock. If this appeals then it is something we can arrange, however there are many other ways to explore the Amazon and get up close to nature in differing levels of comfort. Contrary to common belief, the Amazon is not the best place to see wildlife in Brazil. Although the rainforests teem with wildlife it tends to stay out of sight yet nevertheless the area is one of the world’s most iconic destinations. We can arrange jungle lodge stays, journeys by river boat and indigenous visits as ways to explore the area giving you the chance to get under the skin of this immense area and the chance to see local communities, pink river dolphins, piranhas and much more.</div>

In southern Brazil and in Bahia there are great opportunities to see Right Whales close up to rival any similar destination in the world. In the south of Brazil the Southern Coast of Santa Catarina becomes the stage for an amazing natural spectacle, with the arrival of the Southern Right Whales. Escaping the Antarctic winter, they migrate north in search of warmer and calmer waters for reproduction and nurturing of their young calves. In the small, half-moon shaped bays of Santa Catarina, they come very close to the shore and on clear days they can be seen from your hotel room or the beachfront. The boat trips though are a must for a close encounter with these giant mammals on a holiday to Brazil.</div>

The Baiazinha Lodge is a bird-shaped house, located on the shores of a lake, with 6 standard rooms decorated in traditional ranch style.
