As Christmas is rapidly approaching, it seemed a very appropriate time to touch upon some great reasons why an African safari is an excellent way to celebrate the festive season. Christmas is one of those occasions that is celebrated a myriad different ways. There are cultural and geographic differences, but also each family seems to develop their own unique and special ways of celebrating. If you grew up in the northern hemisphere, then wintry images of snow and roast dinners will get you in a festive mood; whereas if you’re from the southern hemisphere then you probably spent your Christmases trying to find ways to keep cool and stay out of the sun. For many people, Christmas is a time for getting together with family and friends, of eating your favourite foods and enjoying spending some quality time together.</div>

When I was growing up, my family always liked to use Christmas as an opportunity to travel, to spend the Christmas period somewhere different, to take our celebrations on the road and really embrace the Christmas spirit in whatever part of the world we found ourselves. One of my favourites was the year that we decided to undertake a Christmas safari. Here are five of the best ways to celebrate Christmas while on safari in Africa:</div>

<strong>1. Discover the wildlife</strong></div>

There are lots of reasons that make the Christmas period an excellent time to embark on an African safari. Not only is it a great way to escape the chill of a northern hemisphere winter, but in countries such as Namibia and Botswana the countryside is in almost perfect condition. In this part of the world the first rains after the dry season usually begin to fall during November and have generally finished by mid-December, so there is a unique window of perfect weather before the wet rainy season kicks in from January to March. Not only is it generally not raining over Christmas, the November rains mean that the grasslands have had a chance to grow, dramatically changing the face of this beautiful landscape. Animal life is also plentiful at this time of year as numerous species such as antelope and zebra will time their breeding pattern to when there is maximum grass to feed on – this means that you should get some great photos of young antelope and zebra bounding around before your camera lens. This is also a good time of year for viewing reptiles and also birds who will be returning from their winter migration in preparation for the breeding season.</div>

Plentiful rainfall means that the water-holes will all be full and therefore there is less reason for animals to congregate at specific locations. This is going to make it a little more difficult to see wildlife en masse. Another challenge is that the lush and abundant grasslands create great camouflage and plenty of hiding places, so again, spotting the animals that you’ve come to see will take a bit of patience and persistence.</div>

Christmas is the season for giving, but it doesn’t have to all be about expensive gifts that are too difficult to fit into your luggage. Why not take the opportunity to use your Christmas holiday to help others. One easy way is to visit a local orphanage. Orphanages in Africa come in all shapes and sizes, but you can have a really positive impact on the lives of these children just by showing an interest in their schooling and giving them some insights into the wider world. If you’re in Tanzania, one option is the Yatima Orphanage which helps to provide housing, food, education and medical care to vulnerable children.</div>

There are lots of different Christmas traditions throughout Africa, but for those that follow the Christian faith, going to church and having a celebratory meal with family and friends is common. Roasted goat is one of the most popular dishes for families to share at Christmas and is something you should try, if you’ve not yet had the opportunity.. If you’re celebrating while on safari, then your celebrations will depend a little on the type of safari lodge or camp that you’re staying at. No doubt there will be decorations and special meals available, but (depending on your budget and your festive spirit) you can make this as traditional or relaxed as you would like it to be. If you need a Bûche de Noël in order for your Christmas celebrations to be complete, then you should probably check in advance whether this might be available – it’s not a dessert that you will generally find on the safari lodge menu.</div>

Continuing with the gourmet theme, we couldn’t forget to mention the delightful proliferation of world-class vineyards in South Tyrol. There are so many unmissable offerings; you’ll need to dedicate a day or two to the exploration (and tastings) of some of the best. With evidence suggesting the people of this region have been winemaking since the time of the Romans, they’ve had enough time to hone their skills. Journey down the “Wine road” along the valley of the River Adige and pay a visit to any of the 150 plus wineries that South Tyrol lays claim to. You can cycle, walk or have a driver take you between vineyards (the latter may be advisable after the 10<sup>th</sup> wine tasting of the day). The wines made from the grapes Gewürztraminer, Schiava/Vernatsch and Lagrein, which area indigenous to the area, are the ones to look out for.</div>

Mountain gorilla trekking is, for most people, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers an opportunity to spend one thrilling hour with extraordinary primates.  Just three countries house these amazing, and threatened, creatures: DR Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. Rwanda’s and Uganda’s tourism infrastructure is significantly more developed than that of DR Congo and, as a result, they receive the bulk of the gorilla-trekking visitors. Because trekking permits are limited in number and have been increasing in price (current price at time of publishing ranges from $600 to $750 for one permit in high season), it’s important to plan well in advance.</div>

<strong>When to book a mountain gorilla trek</strong></div>

There are two main seasons: a wet (low) and dry (high) season. The wet season sees more rains and is generally from March through May and again from September through November. The dry season runs from December through February and again from June through August. It is no surprise, then, that the vast majority of visitors frequent Bwindi (Uganda), Volcanoes (Rwanda) and Virunga (DR Congo), during the high season. But, along with the comfort of drier socks and better vistas comes the necessity to book much further in advance and pay higher lodging fees.</div>

<strong>Why Bwindi in the low season is the way to go</strong></div>

If you’ve dreamed of seeing the mountain gorillas and are in good physical condition, you may want to consider visiting during the low season. Why? For starters, Bwindi is home to roughly half of the 800 mountain gorillas left in existence. The remaining gorillas are spread across Mgahinga (Uganda), Volcanoes and DR Congo. Bwindi also offers significant discounts on permits issued during the low season. A $600 permit will run you $350. Same goes for lodging: you’ll get the same luxury accommodation for less and, most probably, the overall price of your tour will be lower. And, while it’s true the trekking conditions are more treacherous when the conditions are misty and wet, it’s also true that the gorillas often are not as far away, since they’ve an abundance of food during the rainy season. This means you won’t have to trek as far to see them. And, as an added bonus, the low season is also an excellent time for spotting migratory birds.</div>

Some of Myelo’s profits are re-invested into those very same people through a not-for-profit organisation that Carmen also runs. For example, a brass maker’s workspace has been renovated so that it can be expanded and production increased.</div>

Similarly, Mulberries is a silk farming and handicraft cooperative led by Kommaly Chanthavong that has seen the revival of the Lao practice of silk production, helping the social and economic development for as many as 3,000 farmers, weavers and artisans from over 200 village families. They produce an heirloom textile and beautiful scarves that can be purchased through the DARA Artisans website.</div>

Gocta Falls owes its erstwhile lack of popularity to a local legend. Natives to the area grew up believing in a mermaid who lived in the pool at the base of the waterfall. The Gocta mermaid had a bad habit of drowning the men she seduced, and made the falls an unappealing place to visit. Visitors and locals will attest to the supernatural atmosphere that surrounds the waterfall.</div>

It takes a couple of hours to hike to Gocta Falls from the small town of Cocachimba. During the drier months the waterfall becomes a narrow stream – it consists only of a white mist by the time it reaches the base of the falls. Gocta divides into separate cascades, forming two distinct drops. The pool you’ll find at the bottom is muddy looking, but the view looking up at this imposing waterfall is well worth the hike.</div>

La Fortuna’s waterfall shoots over a mossy cliff and forms a small, blue-green gem of a swimming hole. This waterfall is 230 feet (70 m) tall. You can clamor over the rocky rim of the pool to splash in the cascade.</div>

Oropendola Waterfall is located off one of the paths just outside of the Rincón de La Vieja National Park. You’ll pay a small admission to hike to the Oropendola Falls. From the main gait, it’s a 20-minute walk. This waterfall is 82 feet (25 meters) tall.  The bright-blue plunge pool narrows to a clear stream opposite the waterfall.</div>

Before you visit the falls, take a hiking or horseback tour of the Rincón de La Vieja National Park. It is named after the Rincón de La Vieja Volcano, which erupted in 2011. Because of the fairly recent eruption, visitors cannot hike to the crater of the volcano. But Rincón de la Vieja National Park still has 34,000 acres (12,759 hectares) of wildlife to explore.</div>

Río Celeste waterfall is the highlight of the river that runs through Tenorio National Park. This river flows with strikingly turquoise-colored waters. In English, the word “celeste” translates to sky-blue.  You’ll probably hear words like “fairytale” and “magical” when people talk about the color of the water, but there’s a scientific explanation – the color comes from the calcium carbonate and sulphuric minerals in the water, courtesy of the nearby Tenorio Volcano.</div>

Travelers come to Tenorio National Park to see both the volcano and the surrounding cloud forest. This humid, misty environment occurs only at high elevations. It allows moss, bromeliads, and orchids to grow in abundance, adding to the otherworldly appearance of the sky-blue river.</div>

Although this isn’t the tallest waterfall on our list, it is fairly wide, and the force of the water will probably keep you from swimming directly under the cascade. It’s a memorable spot to take a dip, and you can reach it after an hour of hiking. You can also enjoy the waters of the Río Celeste in the hot springs that bubble near the waterfall.</div>
